What is Trichology and what does a Trichologist do?
Trichology (from Greek θρίξ, gen.: τριχός, “hair”) is the branch of dermatology that deals with the scientific study of the health of hair and scalp. Trichologists are hair and scalp specialists (one type of skin specialist) who determine the causes of hair fall, hair breakage, hair thinning, miniaturization of hairs, diseases of the scalp and who recommend treatment according to cause.
Trichologists are not doctors but paramedical professionals that work with your doctor/ dermatologist to solve your particular hair or scalp issue. In some cases you can see a Trichologist, and if there are no underlying health issues, your Trichologist may be able to put you on a treatment plan that will resolve the issue at hand. In other cases the Trichologist may request you have tests completed under the supervision of your doctor that will help identify or resolve your hair and/ or scalp problem.
An individual may complain of sudden excessive hair loss from all over the scalp, a bald patch which has suddenly appeared, or itching and excessive scaling of the scalp. The trichologist will carefully question each new client and examine the scalp thoroughly to assess the problem and its cause. A microscopic examination of the hair might be required to aid in the diagnosis of the problem.
The trichologist must then decide if treatment is necessary and whether the problem is within his or her realm to treat, or should be dealt with by another specialist. Treatment by a trichologist might consist of the application of a particular cream or lotion to the scalp or the use of nutritional therapy.
