What Is Trichology and What Does a Trichologist Do?

Trichology is a branch of dermatology that deals with the scientific study of the health of hair and scalp. Trichologists are hair and scalp specialists (one type of skin specialist) who determine the causes of hair fall, hair breakage, hair thinning, miniaturization of hairs, diseases of the scalp and who recommend treatment according to the cause.

Trichologists are not doctors but paramedical professionals that work with your doctor/ dermatologist to solve your particular hair or scalp issue. In cases where there are no underlying health issues, your Trichologist will be able to put you on a treatment plan to resolve the issue at hand. In other cases the Trichologist may request you have tests completed under the supervision of your doctor that will help identify or resolve your hair and/or scalp problem.

Trichologists treat a wide range of hair and scalp issues. For example, an individual may complain of sudden excessive hair loss from all over the scalp or a bald patch which has suddenly appeared; or an individual may be suffering from itching and excessive scaling of the scalp. The trichologist at our Mississauga hair loss clinic will carefully question each new client about their symptoms and examine the scalp thoroughly with a micro-camera and skin diagnostic equipment to assess the problem and its cause.

A trichologist will then decide if treatment is necessary and whether the problem is within their realm of treatment, or if the condition should be addressed and treated with a different specialist. Treatment by a Trichologist might consist of topical treatments, vitamin therapy and/or laser therapy performed in-clinic as well as at-home application.
