Causes of Hair Loss: Genetic

As we get older, both men and women experience some hair loss.  It is a normal part of the aging process.  Androgenetic Alopecia (or genetics) accounts for 95% of all hair loss.  It often runs in families and affects some people more than others.  With today’s environment, our North American diets and lifestyle we live in, we are seeing more and more young women experiencing thinning hair. 

For many years, the hair loss industry thought that Androgenetic alopecia was caused the predominance of the male sex hormones, testosterone, which women also have in trace amounts under normal conditions.  While testosterone is at the core of the balding process, DHT is thought to be the main culprit.

In many of the hair loss journals that has been written on this topic, it goes on to say that Testosterone converts to DHT with the aid of the enzyme Type II 5-alpha reductase, which is held in a hair follicle’s oil glands.  Scientists now believe that it’s not the amount of circulating testosterone that is the problem, but the level of DHT binding to receptors in scalp follicles.  DHT shrinks hair follicles, making it impossible for healthy hair to survive.
